'Wrapping sustainably' - Insight into presenting your products in the context of consumer expectation and behaviour
Packaging the Future Workshops
By Professor Tom Fisher and Dr Janet ShiptonPart of a series of workshops designed for any small to medium firm in the East Midlands who use packaging and materials in any aspect of their business. It is delivered by experts in commercial packaging.
Like many of us, products look better with their clothes (packaging) on, and rely on them to communicate status, values and aspiration. In this workshop we explore our interactions with packaging beyond pure fuction; how our understanding of emotion, symbolism, play, thrift and habit are essential in moving towards more sustainable packaging.
Authors of Designing for Re-Use: The Life of Consumer Packaging (2009), Tom Fisher and Janet Shipton will delve into the complexities surrounding sustainable packaging and the effect this has on future business activity. Working in partnership with the Future Factory project to help define your approach to these issues, formulate a plan and facilitate change. The Future Factory offers continuing tailored support for your business to help you address sustainability issues and provides an entry point to the extensive academic/technical resources of Nottingham Trent University and other expertise. The workshops are designed to run as a sequential series, but participants are welcome to enrol for just one of them. Professor Tom Fisher's interest in consumption stems from his experience as a designer and his perspective is informed by sociological and anthropological approaches to the subject. His current research centres broadly on human/object relationships and his research, research supervision and consultancy engage with the materiality of everyday experiences and particularly their relationship to the design of objects. Tom's commercial consultancy has included work for leading packaging manufacturers including Crown Plc and Amcor Flexibles to uncover consumers' interpretations of physical features of containers and plastic packaging materials. Tom is a Professor of Art and Design at Nottingham Trent University.Dr Janet Shipton graduated in Packaging Design and worked in the packaging industry for over 15 years. Her research interests lie in the social relationships we have with packaging and how this affects ethical consumption and disposal practical. Janet is also involved in research in the role and methodology of multi-disciplinary design teams in the packaging innovation process.Janet is Creative Director of Design Futures & Packaging Researcher for the Art and Design Research Centre.Places on all free workshops are limited.
